Last Saturday, some friends and I went to one of my favorite places...the library. What made this visit more special was that the library was having a sale, selling old materials and new donations.
For those who have never been to a library sale, you are missing out. At prices from $0.25-$1 a book, anyone who likes to save money and read can understand the excitement. We arrived at the library 30 minutes before the big event-we still were about 50 people back in line-and talked about what we were looking for and what sections we were heading to. When the doors finally opened, we flooded into the library basement and shuffled through the crowd in opposite directions.
The fun of these sales is trying to be polite while barging through hordes of fellow book-lovers, stepping over children who are sprawled on the floor reading, sorting through shelves of books for that one special novel and listening to the hum of conversations as people compare finds, chat about the "it" book of the moment and call for their missing children, who are probably the ones on the floor.
We spent about half an hour fighting the crowds and stuffing books in our bags before getting in line...and waiting 20 more minutes to pay for our treasures. But it was all worth it. I ended up with eight books, which would have cost me over $50 had I bought them new. Library sale price: $3.50. My advice to anyone who loves reading and a great deal...ask when the library near you is having a sale and go. You'll have treasures and stories to enjoy for a long time.
