When I was making this the other day, it struck me that it would be a perfect recipe to share with you all here. It's easy, fast, delicious, and...you can make it the day before!
Ingredients:
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
3 apples, peeled, cored, sliced (I used Fuji but Granny Smith would be delicious too)
1 cup dried cranberries or raisins
several slices of french bread, one inch thick
6 eggs, beaten
1 1/2 cups milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
Mix the butter, brown sugar, and 1/2 tsp cinnamon and pour in a 9x13 dish.
Tommy got me this amazing apple peeler/corer and for recipes like this it comes in handy. Or you can do it the old fashioned way.
Here they are, ready to slice!
Layer them on the brown sugar mixture and sprinkle the cranberries or raisins over the apples. Arrange the bread in a single layer over the apples.
Mix the remaining ingredients and pour evenly over the bread. Then cover and refrigerate for 4-24 hours.
Preheat the oven to 375 and put the dish from the fridge right into the oven for 30-45 minutes. Uncover and bake for another five minutes. Done!
This is a great dish for company. Put it together the night before and pop it in the oven for breakfast, brunch, or dinner! It's also great for mornings when you want to serve something special without a lot of fuss like Christmas, Father's Day, Easter. When will you make it?
